Cameron Smith owns a three bedroom house in East Kilbride, Scotland, which he has lived in for the last 4 years. Thanks to his part-time reception role at SCLD transitioning into a fulfilling 11-year career, he was able to save enough to buy a place of his own. Cameron refers to himself as a motivational speaker thanks to the skills and confidence he gained on DFN Project SEARCH.

A Storytelling Activist
Referring to himself as a motivational speaker, Cameron uses his story to urge employers to employ more people with a learning disability. He was recently on stage in the Netherlands talking about employment and well-being for people with learning disabilities where he got to meet the Queen of The Netherlands and The Minister of Mental Health through his work with The Global Leadership Exchange.
Alongside his work as a Development Worker with SCLD, Cameron volunteers with The Scouts and has recently been appointed as a Non-Executive Director for Thera (Scotland). Cameron is passionate about making the lives of people with learning disabilities better, and he attributes a lot of his achievements and success to his own DFN Project SEARCH journey.
Before DFN Project SEARCH, Cameron described himself as ‘very, very shy’, someone who was bullied and kept to himself; now he ‘can’t shut up’ and will happily present to audiences of over 500 people about employing people with learning disabilities!
If it wasn’t for DFN Project SEARCH and the determination of his career advisor, Cameron’s struggle through school would have continued into college, without any idea of what he wanted to do in the future. Now, Cameron works in a hybrid role where he is challenged, supported and valued. Cameron is proud of himself as are his parents!
I wouldn’t be here working flexibly from home without DFN Project SEARCH.
