Luke

Luke completed placements in Digital Media Investigations Unit, Force Control Room – Switchboard and Force Crime Registrar Unit. During his placements Luke has learnt key business administration skills which has helped him to gain a placement on the Police Staff Apprenticeship Scheme. Luke has also learnt communication and teamwork skills which have helped him in his personal life and improve his wellbeing and self-esteem.

Luke has autism and ADHD and is aware that he can let negative experiences take over his thought processes and impact him on and off the course. Luke found it difficult to “switch off” at times when finishing his placements so had to find ways of overcoming these challenges. Luke learnt over the duration of the course to let his support staff, for example Employability Coach, know when he is overthinking a matter and looked at ways of dealing with this.

Luke has secured a place on the Lancashire Constabulary Police Staff Business Administration Apprentice scheme and has started work in the Organisation Development department. Over 400 people applied for the role and Luke was one of ten successful candidates. This is a 3 year apprenticeship and a full-time position – 37.5 hours over five days – Monday to Friday.

Securing paid employment has changed Luke’s outlook on life, especially when it comes to money and the value of working.

Luke’s mum, Lynn says that she is “so proud of Luke and how much progress he’s made since having a place on this internship. I’m so hopeful now for the future.”
